Fakulty are major organizational units within a university that group related disciplines and degree programs under a single administration. They are responsible for organizing teaching and research in their field and for managing resources within the university framework. In the Czech Republic, the term for these units is fakulta; their plural nominative is fakulty, while the locative plural—used with prepositions such as na fakultách (in faculties)—is fakultách.

Each faculty is typically led by a dean (děkan) and governed by a faculty council. The dean and council oversee curricula, admission requirements, hiring, budgeting, and strategic development in coordination with the wider university administration and central governance.

A faculty may encompass several departments, institutes, or centers, each focusing on a specific discipline or group of related disciplines. Faculties award degrees within their field (for example bachelor’s and master’s programs; doctoral studies may be organized at the faculty or in associated research institutes depending on the university).

Compared to departments, faculties are larger units and often have more autonomous decision-making in academic matters. Interfaculty programs and multidisciplinary centers can cross faculty boundaries.

Examples of faculties at major Czech universities include the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Medicine, and Faculty of Science. Universally, the concept exists in many higher education systems, where similar units may be called faculties, schools, or colleges and are typically contrasted with department-level units.
