Fagotsütoosivõimes refers to the ability of cells, particularly phagocytes, to engulf and internalize solid particles, such as microorganisms, cellular debris, and foreign substances. This process is a crucial component of the innate immune system and plays a vital role in maintaining tissue homeostasis and eliminating pathogens.

The process of phagocytosis begins with the recognition of the particle by the phagocyte. This recognition can be mediated by various receptors on the phagocyte's surface that bind to specific molecules on the particle, such as opsonins (antibodies or complement proteins) that coat the particle. Once recognition occurs, the phagocyte extends pseudopods, which are temporary projections of the cell membrane, to surround the particle.

Following the engulfment, the particle is enclosed within a membrane-bound vesicle called a phagosome. The phagosome then fuses with lysosomes, which are organelles containing hydrolytic enzymes and reactive oxygen species. This fusion creates a phagolysosome, where the internalized particle is degraded and broken down into smaller, less harmful components. The remaining waste products are then expelled from the cell through exocytosis.

Fagotsütoosivõimes is essential for the clearance of dead or dying cells, preventing the accumulation of cellular debris, and for initiating adaptive immune responses by presenting antigens from the engulfed particles.
