Fagosyyttisoluun, often referred to as phagocytosis, is a cellular process by which certain types of cells, known as phagocytes, engulf and internalize larger particles. These particles can include microorganisms like bacteria and viruses, dead or dying host cells, and foreign debris. This process is crucial for the immune system's defense against pathogens and for the removal of cellular waste.

The mechanism of phagocytosis involves several stages. First, the phagocyte must recognize and bind to the particle. This recognition is often mediated by specific receptors on the phagocyte's surface that bind to molecules on the surface of the particle. Once bound, the phagocyte extends its cell membrane, forming pseudopods that surround and enclose the particle. This creates a membrane-bound vesicle within the phagocyte called a phagosome.

Following engulfment, the phagosome fuses with lysosomes, which are organelles containing powerful digestive enzymes and reactive oxygen species. This fusion forms a phagolysosome, where the engulfed material is broken down and neutralized. The resulting waste products are then eliminated from the cell.

Key phagocytic cells in the human body include neutrophils and macrophages. Neutrophils are typically the first responders to sites of infection, while macrophages are more long-lived and play a role in both innate and adaptive immunity, as well as tissue repair. The ability of phagocytes to perform phagocytosis is fundamental to maintaining tissue homeostasis and protecting the organism from disease.
