Faasiüleminekud, also known as phase transitions, refer to the changes in the physical state of matter as energy is added or removed. These transitions occur when a substance shifts from one state—such as solid, liquid, or gas—to another, often accompanied by noticeable changes in properties like density, volume, and molecular arrangement. Common examples include the melting of ice into water, the boiling of water into steam, and the freezing of water into ice.

The process is governed by thermodynamic principles, particularly temperature and pressure. At specific points called phase transition temperatures, the internal energy of a substance reaches a critical level, allowing molecules to overcome intermolecular forces and transition between states. For instance, during melting, thermal energy disrupts the rigid structure of a solid, enabling it to flow as a liquid. Similarly, evaporation involves molecules in a liquid gaining enough energy to escape into the gaseous state.

Phase transitions are fundamental in various scientific and industrial applications. In chemistry, they play a key role in reactions and separations, while in engineering, they influence material properties and design.
