Förhistoriskt refers to the period of time before written records. It encompasses the vast expanse of human existence and the history of the Earth preceding the invention of writing systems. The prehistoric period is broadly divided into distinct ages based on the dominant materials used for toolmaking. The Stone Age, the earliest and longest, is further subdivided into the Paleolithic (Old Stone Age), Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age), and Neolithic (New Stone Age). This technological advancement led to more sophisticated tools, weapons, and advancements in metallurgy. The Iron Age, the final major prehistoric era, is defined by the widespread use of iron. This period witnessed the rise of complex societies, the development of trade networks, and the beginnings of what would later be recorded history.
