Fényreflektálás, often translated as light reflection, is a fundamental optical phenomenon that describes the change in direction of a light ray when it encounters the surface of a medium and bounces back into the same medium. This process is governed by the law of reflection, which states that the angle of incidence, the angle between the incoming light ray and the normal (a line perpendicular to the surface at the point of incidence), is equal to the angle of reflection, the angle between the reflected light ray and the normal. Furthermore, the incident ray, the reflected ray, and the normal all lie in the same plane.

The nature of reflection depends on the properties of the reflecting surface. When light strikes a smooth, polished surface, such as a mirror, it undergoes specular reflection. In specular reflection, parallel incident rays are reflected as parallel rays, preserving the image of the light source. This is why mirrors produce clear and sharp images. In contrast, rough surfaces, like paper or clothing, exhibit diffuse reflection. Here, the surface irregularities cause incident parallel rays to scatter in many different directions upon reflection. This scattering is why we can see most objects in our environment; the light from the source is reflected diffusely towards our eyes from all parts of the object.

Fényreflektálás is crucial for vision, allowing us to perceive the world around us. It also plays a significant role in various technologies, including telescopes, cameras, lasers, and optical fibers, where controlled reflection is essential for their operation. The reflectivity of a surface, which is the ratio of reflected light intensity to incident light intensity, is a key characteristic that determines how much light is bounced back and influences the appearance of objects.
