Extracellular interstitial refers to the space and fluid that surrounds cells within tissues. It is distinct from the intracellular space, which is the area inside the cells. The interstitial space is filled with interstitial fluid, a watery solution that bathes the cells. This fluid is derived from blood plasma that filters out of capillaries, the smallest blood vessels, and it contains water, ions, nutrients, signaling molecules, and waste products.

The interstitial space plays a crucial role in facilitating the exchange of substances between the blood and the cells. Nutrients and oxygen from the blood diffuse into the interstitial fluid and then into the cells, while waste products and carbon dioxide move from the cells into the interstitial fluid and then back into the bloodstream or lymphatic system.
