Exposure compensation is a feature found on many digital cameras that allows the user to manually adjust the brightness of a photograph. When a camera's automatic exposure system determines the correct exposure settings, it may sometimes produce images that are too dark or too bright for the photographer's desired outcome. Exposure compensation provides a way to override this automatic decision.

The compensation is typically expressed in "stops" of light. A positive value, such as +1 or +2, tells the camera to make the image brighter than it would normally be. Conversely, a negative value, such as -1 or -2, instructs the camera to make the image darker. Each full stop represents a doubling or halving of the amount of light that reaches the sensor. For example, +1 stop means twice as much light, and -1 stop means half as much light.

Photographers use exposure compensation in various situations. If the camera is fooled by a very bright subject, like snow, it might underexpose the image, making the snow appear gray. In such cases, applying positive exposure compensation can correct this. Conversely, if the subject is very dark, the camera might overexpose it, and negative compensation would be needed. Understanding and using exposure compensation is a key step in gaining creative control over image brightness and achieving the desired look in photographs.
