Explosionsskyddet, often translated as explosion protection, refers to the measures and technologies implemented to prevent or mitigate the effects of explosions in environments where flammable substances are present. This is crucial in industries such as chemical processing, oil and gas, mining, and handling of combustible dusts. The fundamental principle is to eliminate or control one or more elements of the explosion triangle: fuel, oxygen, and an ignition source.

Measures for explosion protection can be broadly categorized into passive and active systems. Passive measures involve inherent safety design, such as using non-sparking materials, ensuring proper ventilation to keep concentrations of flammable substances below their lower explosive limit, and grounding equipment to prevent static electricity buildup, which can act as an ignition source. Inerting, by replacing oxygen with an inert gas like nitrogen, is another passive method.

Active systems, on the other hand, are designed to detect and react to an impending explosion. These include explosion suppression systems that inject a suppressant agent to quench the flame front, and explosion venting systems that relieve pressure by opening a rupture panel or disc, directing the blast away from personnel and equipment. Explosion isolation systems are also employed to prevent an explosion from propagating through interconnected pipelines or ductwork. Regulatory standards and guidelines, such as ATEX directives in Europe, provide frameworks for assessing risks and implementing appropriate explosion protection measures to ensure safety in hazardous areas.
