These tanks typically consist of a sealed vessel, often partially filled with air or an inert gas, separated from the system fluid by a diaphragm or bladder. When the system fluid heats up and expands, it pushes against the diaphragm, compressing the air or gas cushion. This compression absorbs the excess volume, keeping the system pressure within safe operating limits. When the fluid cools and contracts, the compressed air or gas expands, pushing fluid back into the system to maintain the desired pressure.

The proper sizing and charging of an expansion tank are vital for the efficient and safe operation of any hydronic system. An undersized or improperly charged tank can lead to frequent pressure fluctuations, damage to system components, and reduced efficiency. Conversely, an oversized tank may not effectively manage pressure changes. Regular inspection and maintenance, including checking the air charge pressure, are recommended to ensure the expansion tank continues to perform its intended role.
