Expansieratio, or expansion ratio, is a dimensionless quantity used to describe how much a gas or fluid expands when moving from a high-pressure state to a lower-pressure state. The exact meaning of the ratio depends on the context and may be expressed as a volume ratio, an area ratio, or, in some cases, related to pressure and temperature changes.

In nozzle and propulsion technology, the expansion ratio most often refers to the area ratio of a nozzle: the exit cross-sectional area divided by the throat area. This expansion ratio indicates how much the exhaust expands as it leaves the nozzle and influences thrust, efficiency, and performance under different ambient pressures. Higher expansion ratios are common in high-altitude or vacuum operation, while lower ratios are typical for sea-level operation.

In internal combustion engines and other piston-based cycles, expansion ratio is sometimes used to describe the extent of gas expansion during the power stroke, effectively indicating the volume available for expansion. In idealized cycles, it relates to the compression ratio, but real engines are affected by timing, pressure losses, and exhaust processes, so the two ratios may differ in practice.

In thermodynamics and power cycles, expansion ratio can refer to the ratio between volumes or corresponding state variables before and after expansion processes, such as across a turbine or during throttling. It is linked to work output and overall cycle efficiency.
