An excitonpolariton is a composite quasi-particle that arises from the strong coupling between an exciton and a photon. An exciton is a bound state of an electron and a hole in a semiconductor material, representing an excited state. A photon is a quantum of light. When the energy of the exciton and the energy of the photon within a resonant cavity are sufficiently close, they can interact strongly, leading to a significant exchange of energy. This strong coupling causes the exciton and photon to hybridize, forming a new quasi-particle that possesses properties of both its constituents.

The excitonpolariton is characterized by its mixed nature. It has both matter-like properties, inherited from the exciton, such as effective mass and finite lifetime, and light-like properties, inherited from the photon, such as high speed and momentum. The dispersion relation, which describes the energy of the quasi-particle as a function of its momentum, exhibits a characteristic "anti-crossing" behavior when the exciton and photon energies are close. This anti-crossing signifies the strong coupling and the formation of the polariton.

Excitonpolaritons are of significant interest in condensed matter physics and quantum optics due to their unique properties. They can exhibit Bose-Einstein condensation at temperatures much higher than traditional Bose-Einstein condensates of atoms, a phenomenon attributed to their bosonic nature and reduced effective mass. This has opened avenues for exploring fundamental quantum phenomena in solid-state systems. Furthermore, their light-like behavior makes them promising candidates for applications in low-threshold lasers, optical switches, and quantum information processing.
