evidenssinä

Evidenssinä is a Finnish linguistic term used to describe a role rather than a standalone grammatical category. It refers to the use of the noun evidenssi in constructions that mean “as evidence” — that is, to present information in a way that highlights its evidential status. The form is most often discussed in academic descriptions of evidentiality, the study of how languages encode the source of a speaker’s knowledge (for example, whether something is directly observed, reported, or inferred). In Finnish everyday speech, evidential meaning is usually conveyed by verbs, particles, or adverbials rather than by a fixed “evidential” form. Consequently evidenssinä tends to appear mainly in linguistic or journalistic examples rather than in ordinary conversation.

Esimerkki: “Tätä tulosta pidetään evidenssinä.” Translation: “This result is regarded as evidence.”
