ethmoïdites

Ethmoiditis is an inflammation of the ethmoid sinuses, which are air-filled cavities located within the ethmoid bone of the skull, situated between the eyes. This condition is a type of sinusitis, specifically affecting the ethmoid sinuses. It can occur as an acute infection, often following a viral upper respiratory infection, or as a chronic condition.

The symptoms of ethmoiditis can include pain and tenderness around the bridge of the nose, between the eyes, and potentially radiating to the forehead and sides of the head. Nasal congestion and a thick, discolored nasal discharge are common. Patients may also experience a reduced sense of smell, headaches, and a general feeling of malaise. In some cases, the inflammation can affect the eyes, leading to swelling of the eyelids and redness.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and may include nasal endoscopy to visualize the sinus cavities. Imaging studies such as a CT scan can provide more detailed information about the extent of inflammation and potential complications. Treatment for acute ethmoiditis often involves nasal saline irrigation, decongestants, and sometimes antibiotics if a bacterial infection is suspected. For chronic ethmoiditis, longer courses of medication or surgical intervention to improve sinus drainage may be necessary. Complications, though rare, can include orbital cellulitis or vision changes.
