Erytropoetiska refers to the process of erythropoiesis, which is the production of red blood cells (erythrocytes). This vital biological process is primarily regulated by the hormone erythropoietin (EPO). Erythropoiesis occurs in the bone marrow of mammals.

The development of red blood cells is a complex process that begins with hematopoietic stem cells, which are multipotent cells found in the bone marrow. These stem cells differentiate into various progenitor cells, including the erythroid progenitor cells. Under the influence of EPO, these progenitor cells undergo a series of maturation stages. During these stages, the cells increase their hemoglobin content, decrease in size, and eventually lose their nucleus and other organelles, becoming mature erythrocytes.

Erythropoietin is produced mainly by the kidneys in response to low oxygen levels in the blood, a condition known as hypoxia. When oxygen levels drop, the kidneys release more EPO, which then travels to the bone marrow to stimulate erythropoiesis. This mechanism ensures that the body has an adequate supply of red blood cells to transport oxygen to all tissues. Conversely, when oxygen levels are sufficient, EPO production decreases. Conditions like anemia, where the body lacks enough red blood cells, can be treated with synthetic EPO to stimulate red blood cell production.
