Equivalent effective dose is a radiological protection quantity that combines the effects of different tissues and radiation types into a single metric to estimate health risk from ionizing radiation. It is used to assess and compare potential stochastic effects, such as cancer, across exposure scenarios. It is not a physical dose to any tissue.

For a given tissue T and radiation type R, the equivalent dose is H_T = D_T,R × w_R, where D_T,R is the absorbed dose and w_R is the radiation weighting factor reflecting biological effectiveness. The effective dose E aggregates across tissues: E = ∑_T w_T × H_T = ∑_T ∑_R w_T × w_R × D_T,R. The units are sieverts (Sv).

Uses: E is employed in radiation protection to set exposure limits, optimize protection, and compare different exposure situations, including occupational exposure, medical imaging, and nuclear industry scenarios. It provides a population-averaged estimate of lifetime cancer and hereditary risk.

Limitations: E is not a measure of any one person’s dose in a single organ, nor a precise predictor of individual risk. It relies on weighting factors based on long-term population data and carries uncertainties. It should be used with other location- and tissue-specific information when evaluating risk for individuals or specific medical situations.

Regulatory context: The tissue weighting factors w_T and radiation weighting factors w_R are established by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP); versions in ICRP Publication 60 and later 103 updated these factors for international guidelines and safety standards.
