Equipotential lines, also known as equipotential surfaces in three dimensions, are regions in an electric field where the electric potential is constant. Imagine a landscape where all points at the same altitude represent an equipotential line. If you were to move along an equipotential line, you would not need to do any work against the electric field. Conversely, moving across equipotential lines requires work to be done.

These lines are always perpendicular to the electric field lines. This is because the electric field represents the direction of the steepest change in potential, and equipotential lines represent no change in potential. In a uniform electric field, equipotential lines are parallel planes. For a point charge, equipotential surfaces are concentric spheres.

The concept of equipotential lines is useful for visualizing electric fields and understanding the behavior of charges. For instance, a conductor in electrostatic equilibrium will have its surface as an equipotential surface, meaning there is no electric field inside the conductor and no net charge on its surface. The density of equipotential lines indicates the strength of the electric field; where the lines are closer together, the field is stronger.
