Epäcommutatiivisuus, also known as non-commutativity, is a fundamental property in mathematics and physics describing when the order of operations matters. In a commutative operation, the result remains the same regardless of the order of the operands. For example, addition of real numbers is commutative: 2 + 3 = 3 + 2. Multiplication of real numbers is also commutative: 2 * 3 = 3 * 2.

However, many mathematical operations are not commutative. A prime example is matrix multiplication. If A and B are matrices, the product AB is generally not equal to the product BA. This non-commutativity is crucial in fields like quantum mechanics, where the order of measurement operators affects the outcome. Another common example is the cross product of vectors in three-dimensional space, where a × b = - (b × a).

The concept of commutativity is formally expressed by the commutative law. An operation * is commutative if for all elements a and b in the set on which * is defined, a * b = b * a. If this equality does not hold for at least one pair of elements, the operation is considered non-commutative or epäkommutatiivinen. This distinction is vital in abstract algebra, where the properties of algebraic structures are often defined by whether their operations are commutative or not. Commutative algebraic structures are called commutative algebras, while non-commutative ones are called non-commutative algebras.
