Epistemologjia, derived from the Greek words "episteme" (knowledge) and "logos" (study), is the branch of philosophy concerned with the theory of knowledge. It investigates the nature, origin, and scope of knowledge, as well as the methods and limits of acquiring it. Epistemologists explore fundamental questions such as what it means to know something, how we can be sure that what we believe is true, and whether certain knowledge is even possible.

Key areas within epistemology include the study of justification, which examines the reasons or evidence that support a belief; the analysis of truth, exploring what makes a belief true; and the investigation of belief itself, considering its role in knowledge. Different epistemological theories propose various accounts of how knowledge is acquired. Empiricism, for instance, posits that all knowledge originates from sensory experience, while rationalism argues that reason is the primary source of knowledge. Skepticism, on the other hand, questions the possibility of genuine knowledge.

The discipline also delves into the distinction between knowledge, belief, and opinion, and examines the criteria for distinguishing between them. Furthermore, epistemology considers the problem of the external world and our ability to know it, as well as the nature of scientific knowledge and its methods.
