Epifyysialue, also known as the growth plate or physis, is a hyaline cartilage area located near the ends of long bones in children and adolescents. It plays a critical role in the longitudinal growth of bones, allowing for increase in height during developmental years. The epifyssial plate is situated between the metaphysis (the neck portion of the bone) and the epiphysis (the rounded end part of the bone).

This cartilage zone is organized into distinct layers, including the resting zone, proliferative zone, hypertrophic zone, and calcification zone. Chondrocytes (cartilage cells) within these layers undergo a process of proliferation, maturation, and ossification, which leads to the lengthening of the bone. Over time, as an individual matures, the epiphyseal plates gradually ossify and become epiphyseal lines in adulthood, marking the end of bone growth.
