Epifysene is not a standard term in English-language anatomy. In some Scandinavian languages, notably Norwegian, "epifysene" is the definite plural form of epiphysis and thus refers collectively to the epiphyses — the rounded ends of long bones.

An epiphysis is an anatomical region at the end of a long bone that initially forms from secondary ossification centers. Epiphyses are separated from the shaft (diaphysis) by the growth plate (epiphyseal plate) during development; once growth in length ceases, the plate ossifies and the epiphysis fuses to the diaphysis. Epiphyses contribute to joint surfaces, bear articular cartilage, and play a central role in longitudinal bone growth in childhood and adolescence.

Clinically, the epiphyses are important because injuries, infections, or disorders affecting the epiphyseal plate can influence bone growth and joint function. Common concerns include epiphyseal fractures in children, epiphyseal dysplasias (a heterogeneous group of growth disorders), and conditions such as slipped capital femoral epiphysis. Imaging and orthopedic assessment often focus on the epiphyses when evaluating pediatric limb pain, deformity, or trauma.

Etymologically, epiphysis derives from Greek elements meaning "upon" and "growth," reflecting its developmental role. When encountered, "epifysene" should be interpreted in context, typically as a language-specific plural referring to epiphyses.
