epididyymiksessä
Epididyymiksessä refers to the epididymis, a coiled tube located on the back of the testicle. This structure is crucial for the maturation and storage of sperm cells. Sperm produced in the testes are immature and not yet capable of fertilization. They travel from the seminiferous tubules into the epididymis, where they undergo a process of maturation. This maturation involves developing motility, the ability to swim, and the capacity to fertilize an egg. The epididymis is divided into three parts: the head (caput), body (corpus), and tail (cauda). The head receives sperm from the testes, the body is where most of the maturation occurs, and the tail serves as the primary storage site for mature sperm. During ejaculation, sperm are propelled from the tail of the epididymis through the vas deferens. The epididymis is a highly vascularized organ and its environment is carefully regulated to ensure optimal sperm development. Any inflammation or infection of the epididymis, known as epididymitis, can impair fertility and cause pain.
