Enzymes, often referred to as *entsyymit* in Finnish, are biological molecules that act as catalysts to accelerate chemical reactions in living organisms. They play a crucial role in nearly all biological processes, including digestion, metabolism, and DNA replication. Enzymes are typically composed of proteins, though some RNA molecules also exhibit enzymatic activity and are called ribozymes. Their structure usually consists of an active site, where substrates bind and undergo chemical transformation.

Enzymes function by lowering the activation energy of reactions, allowing them to proceed more efficiently under physiological conditions. They are highly specific, often binding to only one type of substrate due to their precise three-dimensional shape and chemical properties. Factors such as temperature, pH, and substrate concentration influence enzyme activity. Extreme deviations from optimal conditions can denature enzymes, rendering them inactive.

Enzymes are classified into six main categories based on the type of reaction they catalyze: oxidoreductases, transferases, hydrolases, lyases, isomerases, and ligases. For example, amylase, a hydrolase, breaks down starch into sugars, while DNA polymerase, a ligase, facilitates DNA replication by joining nucleotides.

In biotechnology and medicine, enzymes are widely used in applications such as food production, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and diagnostic testing. For instance, lactase aids in lactose digestion for individuals with lactose intolerance, while restriction enzymes are essential tools in genetic engineering for cutting DNA at specific sequences.
