Enthesopathy is a medical term describing a disorder or disease affecting an enthesis. An enthesis is the site where a tendon or ligament attaches to a bone. These junctions are crucial for transferring forces between muscles and bones, enabling movement and stability. Enthesopathies can manifest as inflammation, degeneration, or calcification at these attachment points.

The causes of enthesopathies are varied and can include overuse, repetitive strain, direct trauma, or underlying systemic inflammatory conditions like spondyloarthropathies. Conditions such as ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, and reactive arthritis are frequently associated with enthesitis, which is the inflammatory component of enthesopathy. However, enthesopathies can also occur in individuals without systemic disease, often related to biomechanical stress or aging.

Symptoms typically involve pain, tenderness, and stiffness at the affected enthesis. Common sites include the heel (Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis), elbow (epicondylitis), shoulder, and hip. The pain can be exacerbated by activity and may improve with rest. Diagnosis often relies on a physical examination, patient history, and sometimes imaging techniques like ultrasound or MRI to assess the extent of inflammation or degeneration. Treatment aims to reduce pain and inflammation, improve function, and address any underlying causes. This may involve rest, ice, physical therapy, pain medication, corticosteroid injections, or, in cases of systemic inflammatory disease, specific medical treatments.
