An enkelstartsschroef, which translates to "single-start screw" in English, refers to a screw thread characterized by having only one continuous helical ridge that wraps around the screw's shaft. This single ridge forms the entire thread. In contrast, multi-start screws have two or more distinct ridges that run parallel to each other along the shaft.

The primary function of a screw is to convert rotational motion into linear motion or to fasten objects together. The pitch of a screw thread is defined as the distance between the crest of one thread and the crest of the next adjacent thread, measured parallel to the screw's axis. For a single-start screw, the lead of the screw, which is the axial distance the screw advances in one complete revolution, is equal to its pitch.

Single-start screws are the most common type of screw thread encountered in everyday applications, including general assembly, woodworking, and many mechanical fasteners. Their simplicity in design and manufacturing makes them cost-effective and widely available. While they offer good thread strength and are suitable for a broad range of applications, their lead is limited by their pitch. Applications requiring faster linear motion for a given rotational speed, or where higher load-carrying capacity is needed from a single thread engagement, might opt for multi-start screws.
