enhetenNewtonmeter
Newtonmeter is a unit of torque and energy in the International System of Units, SI. Torque is a twisting force, and energy is the capacity to do work. The unit is named after Isaac Newton, an English physicist, and Joseph Henry, an American scientist. It is defined as the torque generated when a force of one newton is applied at a perpendicular distance of one meter from a pivot point. When referring to energy, a newtonmeter is equivalent to a joule, which is the work done when a force of one newton moves an object one meter. While technically the same dimensionally, in common practice, newtonmeter is almost exclusively used for torque, and joule for energy. This distinction helps to avoid confusion between rotational and linear concepts. For example, a wrench applying a force to tighten a bolt creates torque, measured in newtonmeters. A moving object possesses kinetic energy, measured in joules. The symbol for newtonmeter is Nm.
