Energiankerääminen, often translated as energy harvesting or energy scavenging, refers to the process of capturing small amounts of ambient energy from the environment and converting it into usable electrical power. This captured energy is typically too small for conventional power sources but can be sufficient to power low-power electronic devices, eliminating the need for batteries or wired connections.

Various forms of ambient energy can be harvested. These include solar energy captured by photovoltaic cells, kinetic energy from vibrations or motion converted by piezoelectric or triboelectric generators, thermal energy differences converted by thermoelectric generators, and radio frequency (RF) energy from broadcast signals. The choice of harvesting technology depends on the specific environment and the available energy sources.

The harvested energy is usually stored in a capacitor or a rechargeable battery to provide a continuous power supply, especially when the ambient energy source is intermittent. Energy harvesting systems are particularly valuable in applications where battery replacement is difficult or impractical, such as remote sensors, wearable electronics, implantable medical devices, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
