Energiaaineet (often translated as energy carriers) are substances or materials that store and deliver energy within an energy system. They act as energy vectors, allowing energy produced at one time or place to be used later or in a different location. They are distinguished from energy sources, which release energy on demand; energiaineet enable transport, storage, and conversion for end use.

Common categories include chemical energy carriers such as fossil fuels (gasoline, diesel), biofuels, hydrogen, methane, methanol, and ammonia; electrical energy storage devices such as batteries (lithium-ion, solid-state, flow batteries) and supercapacitors; and thermal energy storage materials such as sensible heat storage and phase-change materials, including molten salts. Mechanical energy carriers such as pumped hydro storage and compressed air are also used to store energy as potential energy.

Key properties to compare energiaineet include energy density (gravimetric and volumetric), round-trip efficiency, durability and rechargeability, safety, production cost, and environmental impact over the life cycle. Fossil-derived fuels have high energy density but higher greenhouse gas emissions, whereas hydrogen and certain synthetic fuels offer lower emissions if produced from low-carbon electricity.
