Energiaaaltoja is a term that can be understood as "energy waves" in Finnish, describing waves that transport energy through a medium or through vacuum. In physics, many different types of waves carry energy even though the waves themselves may not involve a net transfer of matter.

Waves are disturbances that propagate through space and time, moving energy from one region to another. The amount of energy carried depends on properties such as amplitude, frequency and medium. For a given wave, energy density describes how much energy is stored per unit volume, while energy flux (or intensity) describes how much energy passes through a surface per unit time. In electromagnetic waves, the energy flow is quantified by the Poynting vector, which depends on the electric and magnetic field amplitudes.

Common examples of energiaaaltoja include electromagnetic waves (radio, microwaves, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays), mechanical waves such as sound waves in air or water waves on the surface, and seismic waves that propagate through the Earth. Each type transports energy in characteristic ways: electromagnetic waves can travel through vacuum, while mechanical waves require a medium.

Applications of energy waves are wide-ranging. They enable communication and broadcasting (radio, television, Wi‑Fi), medical imaging and therapy (ultrasound and X-ray imaging), and the study of the Earth’s interior (seismology). Understanding how waves carry energy also informs safety standards for exposure to electromagnetic fields and the design of devices that either transmit or harvest wave energy.
