Endotelissä is a Finnish term that translates to "in the endothelium" in English. The endothelium is a crucial thin layer of cells that lines the interior surface of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels. It forms the inner lining of the heart as well. This single layer of cells, known as endothelial cells, plays a vital role in maintaining vascular health and regulating many physiological processes.

The endothelium acts as a selective barrier, controlling the passage of substances between the bloodstream and the surrounding tissues. It also produces and releases various molecules that influence blood flow, blood clotting, inflammation, and the growth of new blood vessels (angiogenesis). For instance, it can release nitric oxide, a potent vasodilator that relaxes blood vessels and helps regulate blood pressure. Conversely, it can also produce substances that promote blood clotting in response to injury.

Dysfunction of the endothelium is implicated in the development of numerous diseases, including atherosclerosis, hypertension, diabetes, and inflammatory conditions. When the endothelium is not functioning properly, it can contribute to the buildup of plaque in arteries, making them narrower and less flexible, which increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Therefore, maintaining healthy endothelial function is essential for overall cardiovascular well-being.
