Endosytoitumiseen, commonly known as endocytosis in English, is a fundamental cellular process by which cells absorb molecules from outside the cell by engulfing them with their cell membrane. This process is crucial for a variety of cellular functions, including nutrient uptake, waste removal, and cell signaling. Endocytosis is an active process that requires energy in the form of ATP.

There are several types of endocytosis, each differing in the specific mechanism of membrane engulfment and the size of the particles taken in. Phagocytosis, or "cell eating," is a process where the cell engulfs large particles, such as bacteria or cellular debris. Pinocytosis, or "cell drinking," involves the uptake of fluids and dissolved solutes. Receptor-mediated endocytosis is a more specific process where the cell engulfs molecules that bind to specific receptors on the cell surface. This allows the cell to selectively internalize particular substances from its environment.

During endocytosis, a portion of the cell membrane invaginates, or folds inward, to surround the extracellular material. This forms a small sac called a vesicle, which then pinches off from the plasma membrane and enters the cytoplasm. These vesicles can then fuse with other organelles, such as lysosomes, where the ingested material is broken down or processed. Endocytosis plays a vital role in maintaining cellular homeostasis and facilitating interactions between cells and their environment. It is essential for the survival and proper functioning of most eukaryotic cells.
