Endosomeiksi, also known as endosomes, are membrane-bound compartments found within the cells of eukaryotic organisms. They play a crucial role in the intracellular sorting and trafficking of endocytosed material, such as nutrients, receptors, and other molecules. Endosomes are part of the endosomal-lysosomal system, which is responsible for the degradation and recycling of cellular waste and the regulation of various signaling pathways.

Endosomes are formed through the invagination of the plasma membrane, a process known as endocytosis. Once inside the cell, endocytosed material is transported to early endosomes, which are the first sorting stations in the endosomal pathway. Early endosomes have a slightly acidic pH and are characterized by the presence of specific Rab GTPases, such as Rab5, which regulate their formation and function.

From the early endosomes, cargo is sorted to different destinations. Some material is recycled back to the plasma membrane, while other molecules are transported to late endosomes and subsequently to lysosomes for degradation. Late endosomes are characterized by the presence of Rab7 and have a more acidic pH than early endosomes. They are also involved in the transport of cargo to the trans-Golgi network.

Endosomeiksi are dynamic structures that continuously mature and change their composition and function. They are involved in various cellular processes, including nutrient uptake, receptor downregulation, and signaling. Dysfunction of endosomal trafficking has been linked to several diseases, such as neurodegenerative disorders, cancer, and infections. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying endosomal function is therefore of great importance for both basic research and the development of therapeutic strategies.
