Endoreduplication is a biological process where the genome of a cell is duplicated without the cell undergoing division. This results in cells with a higher ploidy level, meaning they have more than two sets of chromosomes. Endoreduplication is a common phenomenon in eukaryotes and plays a significant role in various developmental processes and tissue differentiation. It is often observed in specialized cells such as plant endosperm, insect salivary glands, and mammalian megakaryocytes. In plants, endoreduplication contributes to the formation of large, polyploid cells that can store nutrients or perform specific functions. For instance, in some species, the endosperm, which nourishes the developing embryo, is formed through endoreduplication. In insects, polytene chromosomes, which are exceptionally large and banded chromosomes found in larval salivary glands, are a result of repeated endoreduplication. These polytene chromosomes are important for gene regulation and allow for rapid secretion of substances. In mammals, megakaryocytes, the precursor cells of platelets, undergo endoreduplication to produce large cells with multiple sets of chromosomes, which then fragment to form platelets. The process of endoreduplication involves the duplication of DNA during the S phase of the cell cycle, but the cell cycle checkpoints that normally trigger mitosis are bypassed, preventing cell division. This allows for the accumulation of genetic material within a single nucleus.
