Endoplasmakasassa, Finnish for the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), is a network of membranous tubules and sacs that forms part of the endomembrane system in eukaryotic cells. It is continuous with the nuclear envelope and extends through the cytoplasm, creating a large internal surface area for biochemical reactions.

There are two distinct regions: rough endoplasmakasassa (RER), studded with ribosomes on the cytosolic surface, where proteins destined for secretion, insertion into membranes, or delivery to lysosomes are synthesized and folded; and smooth endoplasmakasassa (SER), which lacks ribosomes and is involved in lipid synthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, and detoxification processes.

The ER also serves as a storage site for calcium ions and provides a environment rich in chaperone proteins and enzymes that assist in proper protein folding and quality control. Proteins synthesized in the ER undergo initial processing, such as disulfide bond formation and N-linked glycosylation, before being packaged into transport vesicles for the Golgi apparatus.

ER-to-Golgi transport moves proteins and lipids toward further maturation and sorting. If misfolded proteins accumulate, the cell can activate the unfolded protein response to increase chaperone production, enhance degradation of faulty proteins, and restore homeostasis; prolonged stress can lead to apoptosis.

The endoplasmakasassa is essential for cellular organization and function, influencing protein quality control, lipid metabolism, calcium signaling, and overall cell health.
