Endochondral ossification is a process of bone formation that occurs in the long bones of the body. Simultaneously, the cartilage within the center of the bone begins to undergo a process of resorption, where it is broken down and replaced by bone. This is known as endochondral ossification proper.

The process of endochondral ossification is a dynamic one, with bone being continuously added to the surface of the bone and cartilage being continuously replaced by bone in the center. This process allows for the growth and lengthening of the long bones, as well as the thickening and strengthening of the bone.
