Emulsiokumiksi, also known as emulsion rubber, is a type of synthetic rubber produced through emulsion polymerization. This process involves dispersing the monomer in an aqueous medium with the help of an emulsifier, forming stable droplets. A water-soluble initiator then triggers the polymerization reaction within these droplets. This method allows for precise control over the molecular weight and microstructure of the resulting polymer.

Emulsion polymerization is widely used for the production of various elastomers, including styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR), and polychloroprene rubber (neoprene). The process typically takes place in a reactor under controlled temperature and pressure. The emulsifier, often a soap or a surfactant, is crucial for stabilizing the monomer droplets and the growing polymer particles.

The advantages of emulsion polymerization include its ability to handle monomers that are poorly soluble in water, good heat removal due to the water medium, and the production of polymers with high molecular weights. The final product is usually obtained as a latex, which is a stable dispersion of polymer particles in water. This latex can then be used directly in applications like adhesives and coatings, or coagulated to isolate the solid rubber for further processing into tires, hoses, belts, and other rubber goods. The properties of emulsion rubbers can be tailored by adjusting the monomer composition, initiator type, and polymerization conditions.
