Ematopoiesi is the complex process by which all blood cells are formed. This includes red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. In adult mammals, hematopoiesis primarily occurs in the bone marrow, a spongy tissue found within the cavities of bones. The process begins with a small population of multipotent stem cells, known as hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs).

These HSCs have the remarkable ability to self-renew, meaning they can divide to create more HSCs, ensuring a continuous supply of blood cell precursors. They also have the capacity for differentiation, where they develop into more specialized progenitor cells. These progenitor cells then further commit to specific lineages, eventually maturing into the various types of blood cells found in circulation.

Hematopoiesis is a highly regulated process influenced by a variety of growth factors and cytokines. These signaling molecules, such as erythropoietin, thrombopoietin, and various colony-stimulating factors, bind to specific receptors on the stem and progenitor cells, directing their proliferation, differentiation, and survival. The precise balance of these factors is crucial for maintaining adequate blood cell counts and ensuring proper immune function and oxygen transport. Disorders of hematopoiesis can lead to a range of conditions, including anemia, leukemia, and myelodysplastic syndromes.
