Emätinvuotoa, known medically as vaginal discharge, is a normal physiological process that occurs in females of reproductive age. It is a fluid produced by glands in the cervix and vagina, and its primary function is to cleanse and lubricate the vaginal canal, as well as to protect against infection. The amount, color, and consistency of normal vaginal discharge can vary significantly throughout a woman's menstrual cycle.

Typically, healthy vaginal discharge is clear or milky white, thin and watery or slightly thicker, and has a mild odor, or no odor at all. During ovulation, discharge may become more abundant, clear, and stretchy, resembling egg white. Before menstruation, it can become thicker and more opaque.

Changes in vaginal discharge can sometimes indicate an underlying health issue. An increase in the volume of discharge, a change in color (such as yellow, green, or gray), a foul or fishy odor, or accompanying symptoms like itching, burning, or pain can be signs of an infection, such as bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection, or a sexually transmitted infection. If a woman experiences any such concerning changes, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Maintaining good vaginal hygiene is generally recommended, but excessive douching should be avoided as it can disrupt the natural balance of the vaginal flora.
