Elokuvaäänitys, often referred to as film sound recording or movie sound recording, is the process of capturing and recording audio for motion pictures. This encompasses a wide range of sound elements crucial to the cinematic experience, including dialogue, sound effects, Foley, and ambient sound. The primary goal of elokuvaäänitys is to create a rich and immersive soundscape that enhances the visual narrative.

The process begins long before cameras roll, with sound designers and recordists planning the audio requirements for a film. During principal photography, dialogue is typically recorded on set using boom microphones or lavalier microphones. This on-set recording aims to capture clean and intelligible dialogue. However, due to various production challenges like background noise or technical limitations, dialogue often requires further work in post-production.

In post-production, sound editing and mixing are vital. Sound editors assemble all recorded audio elements, synchronize them with the picture, and clean up any unwanted noise. Foley artists recreate everyday sounds such as footsteps, rustling clothes, and object handling to add realism. Sound effects, which can range from realistic to fantastical, are either sourced from libraries or created from scratch. Finally, the score, composed specifically for the film, is added to the mix. All these elements are then carefully balanced and mixed together by a re-recording mixer to create the final soundtrack. This intricate process ensures that the audience not only sees the story but also hears it in its full depth and detail.
