Elektrosyntesien, also known as electrochemistry, is a branch of chemistry that deals with the relationship between electricity, as a measurable and quantitative phenomenon, and identifiable chemical change, with either electricity considered an outcome of a particular chemical change or vice versa. It encompasses the study of both electrolytic and galvanic (voltaic) cells.

In electrolytic cells, electrical energy is used to drive a non-spontaneous chemical reaction. This process is often used in industrial applications, such as the production of aluminum, chlorine, and sodium hydroxide. The key components of an electrolytic cell include an anode, a cathode, an electrolyte, and an external power source.

Galvanic cells, on the other hand, convert chemical energy into electrical energy. They are the basis for batteries and fuel cells. A galvanic cell consists of two half-cells, each containing an electrode and an electrolyte. The two half-cells are connected by a salt bridge or a porous membrane, allowing ions to flow between them while preventing the mixing of the electrolytes.

Electrochemistry plays a crucial role in various fields, including electroplating, corrosion prevention, and energy storage. It is also fundamental to understanding biological processes, such as nerve conduction and muscle contraction, which rely on the movement of ions across cell membranes.
