Elektronátmenet, often translated as electron transfer, is a fundamental chemical process involving the movement of one or more electrons from one chemical entity to another. This transfer can occur between atoms, molecules, ions, or even within a single molecule. Electron transfer reactions are crucial in a vast array of natural and technological phenomena, including photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and battery operation.

There are several mechanisms by which electron transfer can occur. Direct transfer involves the direct physical contact of the donor and acceptor species. This is often facilitated by bridging ligands or through a solvent cage. Another mechanism is Marcus theory, which describes electron transfer rates based on the reorganization energies of the donor and acceptor molecules and the distance between them. Outer-sphere electron transfer involves the electron moving between reactants without significant bond breaking or formation. Inner-sphere electron transfer, conversely, involves the formation of a transient complex where the donor and acceptor share a common atom or ligand, allowing for direct electron exchange.

The driving force for an electron transfer reaction is typically the difference in electrochemical potentials between the donor and acceptor. A species with a lower reduction potential (more easily oxidized) will tend to donate an electron to a species with a higher reduction potential (more easily reduced). Understanding electron transfer is essential for designing catalysts, developing new energy storage devices, and comprehending biological processes.
