Elektroninsiirtäjiksi, often translated as electron carriers, are molecules involved in the process of transferring electrons within a biological system, particularly in cellular respiration and photosynthesis. These molecules act as intermediaries, accepting electrons from one molecule and donating them to another, thereby facilitating the flow of energy.

In cellular respiration, key electron carriers include nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FADH2). These molecules pick up high-energy electrons during the breakdown of glucose and other fuel molecules. They then transport these electrons to the electron transport chain, a series of protein complexes embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane. As electrons move down this chain, energy is released and used to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the primary energy currency of the cell.

During photosynthesis, electron carriers like plastoquinone and ferredoxin play a similar role. They are involved in transferring electrons from photosystems to other components of the photosynthetic machinery. This electron flow ultimately drives the synthesis of ATP and NADPH, which are then used in the Calvin cycle to produce sugars.

The ability of electron carriers to readily accept and donate electrons is crucial for harnessing energy from metabolic processes. Their reversible redox reactions allow them to cycle between oxidized and reduced states, efficiently shuttling electrons and coupled energy through complex biochemical pathways. Without these vital molecular couriers, the efficient generation of ATP and the synthesis of essential organic molecules would not be possible.
