An elektronforrás, or electron source, is a device or material that emits electrons. These sources are fundamental components in many scientific and technological applications, including vacuum tubes, cathode ray tubes, and electron microscopes. The emission of electrons can occur through several mechanisms.

Thermionic emission is a common method where a material, typically a metal filament, is heated to a high temperature. This increased thermal energy allows electrons to overcome the material's work function and escape into the surrounding vacuum.

Field emission, also known as cold cathode emission, involves the application of a strong external electric field to a sharp conductive tip. This field can pull electrons out of the material even at room temperature, provided the field strength is sufficiently high.

Photoelectric emission occurs when light, particularly ultraviolet radiation, strikes a photosensitive material. The energy of the photons in the light is absorbed by electrons, and if this energy exceeds the work function, the electrons are ejected.

Secondary emission happens when a material is bombarded by energetic particles, such as primary electrons or ions. The impact causes some of the target material's electrons to be ejected.

The choice of electron source depends heavily on the specific application's requirements regarding electron energy, beam current, stability, and operating environment. Each mechanism has its advantages and disadvantages in terms of efficiency, longevity, and the complexity of the required equipment.
