Electrons occupy orbitals around the nucleus, and each orbital corresponds to a particular energy level. The lowest energy level, closest to the nucleus, is called the ground state. Conversely, when an electron in an excited state loses energy, it typically emits that energy as a photon of light, returning to a lower energy level. The energy of the emitted photon corresponds to the difference in energy between the two levels.

The arrangement of electrons in these energy levels determines an atom's chemical properties, such as its reactivity and how it forms bonds with other atoms. Spectroscopy, a technique that studies the interaction of light with matter, is used to observe the transitions between these energy levels, providing valuable information about the composition and structure of substances. The specific energy levels are unique to each element, acting as a sort of atomic fingerprint.
