An elektrolitanyagot, often shortened to electrolyte, refers to a substance that produces an electrically conductive solution when dissolved in a polar solvent such as water. This conductivity arises from the dissociation of the electrolyte into mobile ions, which can carry an electrical charge. Electrolytes are fundamental to many chemical and biological processes.

In chemistry, electrolytes are broadly categorized into strong electrolytes and weak electrolytes. Strong electrolytes dissociate completely in solution, meaning nearly all of the dissolved substance exists as ions. Examples include strong acids like hydrochloric acid (HCl) and strong bases like sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Weak electrolytes, conversely, only partially dissociate, establishing an equilibrium between the undissociated molecules and the ions. Acetic acid (CH3COOH) is a common example of a weak electrolyte.

Biological systems rely heavily on electrolytes for crucial functions. In the human body, electrolytes like sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), chloride (Cl-), phosphate (PO43-), and bicarbonate (HCO3-) are essential for nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, hydration, and maintaining proper pH balance. These ions are obtained through diet and are regulated by the kidneys. Imbalances in electrolyte levels can lead to various health issues.

Electrolytes also find widespread application in technology, notably in batteries and fuel cells. The electrolyte acts as a medium for ion transport between the electrodes, completing the electrical circuit and enabling the conversion of chemical energy into electrical energy.
