Elektrogradiënt refers to the difference in electrical potential between two points. This difference can arise from a separation of electrical charges within a system, such as a solution or across a membrane. In biological systems, the electrogradiënt is often a crucial driving force for various cellular processes.

For example, in cells, the electrogradiënt across the plasma membrane, known as the membrane potential, is established and maintained by ion pumps and channels. This electrical gradient, along with a chemical gradient (difference in ion concentration), forms the electrochemical gradient. This electrochemical gradient can then power the transport of other molecules across the membrane, a process called secondary active transport.

The electrogradiënt also plays a vital role in nerve impulse transmission. When a neuron fires, changes in the electrogradiënt across its membrane lead to the propagation of an electrical signal. Similarly, in mitochondria and chloroplasts, the electrogradiënt generated during respiration and photosynthesis is used to synthesize ATP, the cell's primary energy currency. The concept is also applicable in fields like electrochemistry, where it describes the potential difference between electrodes in an electrochemical cell.
