Elektriväli is the Estonian term for electric field. An electric field is a vector field that describes the electrical force exerted on a positive test charge at any given point in space. It is created by electric charges. The strength and direction of the electric field at a point are determined by the magnitude and position of the source charges.

Electric fields are fundamental to electromagnetism. They can be generated by stationary electric charges, and also by time-varying magnetic fields. Conversely, a changing electric field can generate a magnetic field. The concept of an electric field was introduced by Michael Faraday in the mid-19th century.

The SI unit for the electric field strength is volts per meter (V/m). The direction of the electric field is defined as the direction of the force that would be exerted on a positive test charge. Electric field lines are often used to visualize electric fields. These lines originate from positive charges and terminate on negative charges, or extend to infinity. The density of the field lines indicates the strength of the field.

Electric fields play a crucial role in many phenomena, including the operation of electrical devices like capacitors, the propagation of electromagnetic waves such as light, and the interactions between atoms and molecules.
