Electron counting is a fundamental concept in chemistry, particularly in inorganic and organometallic chemistry. It refers to the process of determining the total number of valence electrons surrounding a central atom in a molecule or complex. This method is crucial for understanding the bonding, structure, stability, and reactivity of chemical species.

The basic principle involves assigning a specific number of valence electrons to each atom based on its group in the periodic table. For neutral atoms, this is equal to their group number. When atoms form covalent bonds, each bond contributes one electron to the electron count of the central atom. In ionic compounds, electrons are transferred, and the charge of the ion is considered. For transition metal complexes, electron counting often follows the 18-electron rule, which is analogous to the octet rule for main group elements. The neutral atom method assumes that covalent bonds are formed by the sharing of electrons between neutral atoms.
