Relativity refers to a group of two closely related physics theories developed by Albert Einstein. These theories revolutionized the understanding of space, time, gravity, and the universe.

The first, special relativity, published in 1905, deals with the relationship between space and time. It is based on two fundamental postulates: the laws of physics are the same for all non-accelerating observers, and the speed of light in a vacuum is constant for all observers, regardless of their motion. Special relativity leads to several counterintuitive conclusions, such as time dilation, length contraction, and the equivalence of mass and energy, famously expressed in the equation E=mc².

The second, general relativity, published in 1915, is a theory of gravitation. It describes gravity not as a force, but as a curvature of spacetime caused by mass and energy. Massive objects warp the fabric of spacetime around them, and other objects follow these curves, which we perceive as the force of gravity. General relativity has been experimentally verified through observations such as the bending of light by massive objects and the gravitational redshift of light. Both theories have had profound implications for cosmology, astrophysics, and technologies like GPS.
