Ekspansjonsløkke, also known as an expansion loop, is a term used in engineering and construction to describe a specific configuration of piping designed to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction. When fluids, such as hot water or steam, flow through pipes, the temperature changes can cause the material to expand or contract. This movement can generate significant stress on the piping system, potentially leading to damage, leaks, or structural failure.

An expansion loop is essentially a U-shaped or Z-shaped bend incorporated into the pipe run. This deliberate curve provides a flexible section that can absorb the longitudinal movement caused by temperature fluctuations. As the pipe expands, the loop bends, allowing the pipe to lengthen without putting undue strain on adjacent fixed points or other components. Conversely, when the pipe contracts, the loop straightens or even compresses slightly.
